After the Australian Olympic committee said that the Olympic Village in Brazil was uninhabitable, we called Johnny Quinn for advice. Quinn, as you may recall, had to break out of a bathroom in the Olympic Village in Sochi in 2014 when he was competing as a bobsledder in those games.1. Bring your phone with you everywhere.
Here are his simple tips:
“The number one thing is bring your phone everywhere so if you get trapped in your bathroom (or) if you get stuck in the elevator — both of which happened to me in Sochi — you need to have your phone,” he said. “So definitely bring your phone.”
2. Keep an eye on your teammates.
“The other thing is make sure your teammates know where you’re at. I ran into the issue where my teammate was in the weight room and I was in the village,” he said. “So stay in constant communication with your teammates.”
3. Do a scouting report.
“Do your due diligence,” he said. “Test the door, test the shower, test the toilet before you use it,” he said.
Quinn said that a lot of his ability to deal with the distractions at the Olympics came from his career in the NFL — one, he said, that didn’t go quite as planned. “What’s interesting is leading up to the greatest stage athletically there always seems to be some type of logistical issue going on,” he said.
“So it’s interesting to see that as an athlete. What I do know is all of the Olympians that are getting ready to compete on the world stage now have a distraction that they have to deal with.
“The athletes that know how to handle the distractions the right way know how to filter this and it won’t affect their performance.”
As for the Rio mayor’s offer to put a kangaroo in the Village?
“That is great,” Quinn said. “Anything you can do — again this an exciting time, this is a stressful time — and so if you can make light of a logistical issue like we ran into with the door and the elevator, anything to calm the nerves and make it comfortable.”
